Detection of smooth muscle actin in myoepithelial and smooth muscle cells by immunohistochemistry (IHC) with Actin, Smooth Muscle (1A4) Mouse Monoclonal Antibody may be used to aid in the diagnosis of breast carcinomas, leiomyomas, and leiomyosarcomas.

Smooth muscle actin is a member of the actin family of proteins, which are structural proteins of the cytoskeleton that are present in all cells. Smooth muscle actin is expressed specifically in smooth muscle cells, myoepithelial cells, and myofibroblasts, but not in skeletal muscle or other cell types.1-3 Identification of myoepithelial cells is used to aid in the diagnosis of invasive breast carcinoma. Smooth muscle actin expression is also seen in tumors arising from smooth muscle including leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas.2-3 Immunohistochemistry for smooth muscle actin shows a cytoplasmic pattern of staining.

In combination with other antibodies, this product may be used as an aid in diagnosis.
